Awareness Ribbons

Awareness Ribbons
Disabled World- Awareness ribbons are small pieces of colored ribbon folded in a loop. They are used in United States, Canada, Australia, UK and other parts of the world to show support for a cause or issue. These ribbons come in a variety of colors, patterns, and can be two toned as well, depending on the cause. Today, awareness ribbons are now considered as a universal symbol for social or disease awareness, and a formidable path to cures. There is an unknown number of ribbon colors, with new colors being created and with new awareness campaigns. It’s estimated that there are over 80 different ribbon colors and designs, but that number can still grow.
These ribbons are designed to create a public notice to health, medical conditions, disabilities, and other issues. Two of the well-known are the red ribbon in support of AIDS and the pink ribbon which represents breast cancer awareness. With so many foundations and organizations wanting to bring awareness to the public, many of the ribbon colors are used more than once to represent an issue. The black awareness ribbon not only represent those lost in the September 11th attack but melanoma, narcolepsy, and sleep disorders awareness. The blue ribbon represents more than 35 causes and has many meanings not only here in the states. Multi ribbons also have a variety of meanings and causes such as the yellow/blue ribbon, cow print, ivory with rose, and purple/teal with white stars ribbon.
There is not an official place to register a design or color for a cause. Awareness ribbons are considered to be in the public domain in most countries, and a simple ribbon of a particular color is generally not considered sufficiently original and/or creative enough to be copyrighted by a person - or group. Although, certain designs have been granted a special trademark status such as Canada. They were granted "official mark" status for the pink (breast cancer) awareness ribbons to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
