The Fun in Fun Patches

The Fun in Fun Patches
Girl Scout Leader- Girl Scout Fun Patches is a way for the troops to express herself and can be done as a group or individually. Fun patches don’t typically have a specific activity related to it, some can have to do with the girl’s mother being a troop leader, and the girl can wear a “My Mom is a Leader” fun patch. The “Happy Birthday” patch is another example of a patch that doesn’t require an activity to be earned. But unlike badges, these fun patches must be worn on the back of the vest or sash. If the girl runs out of room, she can place the patch on other clothing or a bag.

Difference of Opinion

Some leaders have different opinions about how these patches should be earned. Some feel they should only be earned as a group after an activity is done together, leaders feel it takes away from the purpose of unity when a girl goes on her own. While others are okay with the girls earning them on their own, such as a community service project she participated in. Part of the scouting culture is self-discovery, and a part of the scouting experience is to grow leaders who can act and think for themselves.

Fun on Their Own

Now that we’ve established that these patches can be earned individually, there are several ways for that to be done. Home Depot sponsored a free event where scouts can learn different woodworking crafts, field trips (Build-a-Bear Workshop), and community service projects (food can drive), even group meeting are ways for fun patches to be earned. Being involved in their community and having a sense of accomplishment is a great feeling and being able to show that encourages others to do the same.
