Unit Coin Designs
We Are the Mighty- The coin challenge game has been around since World War I. If you don’t know how the game is played it typically takes place at a bar, one service member challenges another to show their challenge coin. I the challenged member doesn’t have it, they have to buy the challenger a drink. If the challenged member has their coin, they get a drink from the challenger. Challenge coins come in many unique designs tailored to the unit. That can range from any branch in the military to police units. So no coin is exactly same as other units. Listed below are a few descriptions of designs that speak volumes about a command.
Designs That Tell a Story
U.S. Army diver coin has an awesome shape and several Army diver badges on it. They identify the holder and encourages them to achieve higher certifications as a diver. Believe it or not, but there is a Mickey Mouse challenge coin. The military has co-opped copywriting materials for its unit coins, murals, and posters. The Naval Air Warfare Center in Orlando made a designed a coin that reminded people how easy it is to get to Walt Disney World from the center. Another style that’s a big step from the Mickey Mouse silhouette is the South Park and Friday the 13th challenge coins. They are funny and for the Navy chief petty officers, the Friday the 13th coins are accepted on Friday the 13th in the mess hall. And let's face it, they look pretty cool.
Not all coins are shaped in the traditional circle. The U.S. Navy distributes “coins” shaped like a ticket. These coins remind sailors of a ball they went to. The clear challenge coin does exist. In a picture, you can't tell that it is clear, but it most certainly stands out.
