According to newspressnow.com, Troop 216 put in efforts for victims of Hurricane Harvey by using their bi-annual cookout as an opportunity to raise money for people in the Houston area affected by the natural disaster. The troops gathered at a Lowe’s Home Improvement store and raised about $1,500 on Saturday and Sunday with their cookout and more donations are coming in. the money raised during this cookout is typically used for camping trips, but this time the money was used to help the community. “This is the future of the country here,” Troopmaster Bill Kanke said about his scouts. “We’re trying to teach them leadership skills but we’re also trying to teach them it’s not just about going out camping and having fun, it’s about giving back to the community, helping other people.”
Boy scout Quinn Milligan said helping others is a core value of the boy scouts.“Basically it’s in our Scout Oath and Law to help other people at all times,” Milligan said.
The troop is set to donate 10 percent of the proceeds to the American Red Cross, in addition to 100 percent of donations raised by selling Sonic discount cards and a donation pot. About 20 scouts worked in shifts to make this happen. Boy Scout Zachary Catron said it is important that the country comes together in times like this. “We’re all Americans here,” Craton said. “In scouts, we’ve had people from Texas come up and they’re American. Support America.”

Southwest Emblem

Our staff couldn’t be prouder that these young boys in Missouri came together to show their support of this great state and the people who were affected by the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. This is just one example of values the Boy Scouts of America instills in these boys; merit badges is one way the scouts show their accomplishments. We come together as a nation to lend a helping hand any way we can. www.southwestemblem.com
