Stuck On Us

Stuck On Us
Allstate- We have all seen them. While we are stuck in traffic, parked at the store, or while waiting in the drive-thru line at your favorite fast food joint. Bumper stickers can tell us a lot about the owner of the vehicle- who they are going to vote for, if their kid is on the honor roll, their favorite band, even how many kids they have. All in all, it’s entertaining to read while waiting. Here are a few fun facts you probably did not know about bumper stickers you can enjoy.

Sticky Facts

The first bumper stickers appeared shortly before World War II. They were not sticky at this time but were attached by wires. Supposedly a guy named Forest P. Gill replaced the wire attachments with pressure sensitive adhesive, and as a result bumper stickers became more widespread and practical.
Advertising bumper stickers started at a tourist attraction atop Lookout Mountain, Tennessee with “See Rock City” signs. In the 1940s, visitors to the site had a sticker applied to their car, which duplicated the famous signs painted on the roofs of barns throughout the southeastern USA. These “stickers,” were actually lightweight, screen-printed cardboard. They were attached with thin aluminum strips, running through the end of the sign and wrapping around the bumper.
In Israel, one of the most popular songs of all time is Shirat Hasticker (“The Sticker Song”) by Hadag Nachash, a song composed entirely of bumper sticker slogans.
Bill T. Heermann of Lincoln, Nebraska holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the Largest Collection of Bumper Stickers. Since 1984, Heermann had collected over 4,131 bumper stickers.
